ENVIRONMENTAL PRESSURES TO BE CONSIDERED IN THE MANAGEMENT OF THE ALGONQUIN
ECOSYSTEM:
A POSITION PAPER FOR ALGONQUIN
ECO WATCH
Mike Wilton, Sarah Ingwersen
and David Euler
ABSTRACT
Algonquin Eco Watch is a non-profit charitable organization intended to assist
managers in protecting the structure and function of the Algonquin Ecosystem.
This valuable ecosystem has a number of environmental pressures including:
air and water borne pollutants, decommissioning of an unused railroad line,
high use by people, as well as chemical pollutants like road salt and effluent
from a graphite mine. Algonquin Eco Watch recommends that the railroad bed
be removed and not be allowed to decompose into the adjacent waterways, that
use of other chemicals in Algonquin Park be phased out, that no more recreational
trails be opened to people and domestic animals without extensive public consultation,
that hunting by people in Algonquin Park be phased out. Other concerns that Algonquin
Eco Watch will be monitoring include: headwater streams that affect the water
quality in Algonquin Park, forest management to ensure the continuation of
the high quality work that is already underway, and the impact of fishing
on fish populations in Algonquin Park.
